Smoke signals and carrier pigeons.

Mail

Few countries in the world offer the level of mail service we consider normal in the United States. Some mail may simply not arrive (fortunately, this is not a frequent occurrence, but it does happen).

Letters take four to eight weeks and surface mail packages take around three months. Please number your letters and include “Air Mail” and “Par Avion” on your packages. Put Christian symbols, stickers and Bible verses on packages for security purposes. Strip away any unnecessary packaging from items packed.

Exclude valuable items on the customs declaration forms or mark a “garage sale” price if necessary. If duty is charged, the lower the value, the lower the duty. Avoid buying carrier insurance.

My address during service will be:

KEITH MASKELL, PCV
C/O U. S. PEACE CORPS MALAWI
P.O. BOX 208
LILONGWE, MALAWI
AFRICA
#0888550621

I advise you to shop around to find the best prices and service options though USPS is usually the easiest and most effective carrier.

If you choose to send items through DHL, you must address the package to:

KEITH MASKELL, PCV
C/O U. S. PEACE CORPS MALAWI
AREA 4 PLOT 70
ACROSS FROM OILCOM DEPOT
LILONGWE
MALAWI
#0888550621

**Please include the Peace Corps/Malawi phone number: 265-1-757-157 on all express mail service mailing labels.

(Note: please use online cost calculators before you decide to pack a box and ship it. You can use the USPS estimator here and UPS estimator here. I’ve found that the USPS cost for Flat Rate boxes under 12 x 12 x12 (weighing less than 20 pounds) are substantially cheaper than UPS prices. Don’t be surprised by the costs when you are already at the shipping store, paying.)

Trying to send cash or checks is very risky and is discouraged. It may be easier to deposit directly into my checking account or transfer monies to my Paypal account. Ask me or my mother the details if you are so kind to consider sending me money.

Telephone

Long-distance communication via telephone to the U.S. is available but very expensive. Calling the United States is not as frustrating an experience as it was in recent years. The Volunteer respite houses in Blantyre, Mzuzu, and Lilongwe have phones where I may receive planned calls from family (or in dire emergencies, see PC/Malawi office contact information below).

I do have a cell phone in Malawi. My number for international calls is +265 88 85 50 621. The Malawi country code is 265.
